Product Description
Get busy stacking all different shapes, colors and sizes. This fun Geometric Stacker comes with 25 durable pieces to match and stack on a solid base. Perfect for building shape, color and size differentiation skills. Pieces made of solid wood.We bought one just like this in Target, made for Target and it has none of the problems listed on this product. Paint is still intact after many plays, looks still like new and we have so much fun with it. Stacking and sorting colors, making color piles, then shape piles, then stack by color, by shape etc. It has lots of uses to prevent boredom. Great toy. Yes, you should be careful not to have in laying down in the middle of the room or someplace where your toddler can fall on it. Clean up after play and just have fun with this.
My 23-month-old daughter loves this toy-- she hasn't figured out the more difficult square puzzle yet, but loves to stack the circles and octagons. My 6-month-old son loves it too, but has chewed off some of the paint, which surprised me after hearing what great quality Melissa and Doug toys are (this was one of the first 2 M&D toys I bought). I, like other reviewers, have been a bit frightened of him falling on the 3 prongs and hurting himself. Maybe when he starts walking this toy will get put away for a while.
Warning: keep this in a limited space (on a blanket and/or in one room). The pieces could easily be lost if carried into other parts of the house, and this could frustrate children (not to mention OCD parents like myself).
Young toddlers enjoy taking apart. Older have skills to sort. Wooden toy should be around for years.
My twins got this for Christmas when they were 21 months old. For the last three months it has been their favorite toy. They quickly learned how to sort the shapes onto the poles and stack them in order. You would think they would outgrow it too quickly, but now they have the challenge of matching the same-size square pieces and getting the notches to fit together. For some reason, these little challenges fascinate them and keep them very busy at this stage. I also plan to use it for their first try at stringing beads.
Since my kids are older & steady on their feet, the three posts sticking up really aren't a problem. Even if they fell on them, the posts aren't sharp at all, and I doubt it would hurt.
Also, the paint on our set is different from the current picture. Ours has lighter colors, with a light green ball, cube, and octagon on top. We had no problems with sticking paint.
The only problems we have had are: 1) my kids throw the ball & it gets lost, so I just set the ball aside before letting them play with the set, and 2) the paint on the inside of the circle pieces has worn a little by now, which occasionally makes the pieces get stuck on the posts (pulling the circle back off & flipping it over usually solves this). These are VERY minor complaints, compared to the amount of time my kids have spent playing with this toy. I highly recommend it for 18-30 month olds.
I really like Melissa & Doug toys however, we've only had this toy for two days and with three children playing with it (total probably 4 hours of play so far), the sticks were not glued into base and quickly popped off (the baby did that first thing after removing all the pieces). The other part I did not like was the fact that paint is starting to come off already on the square pieces (on the corners). Even if the paint is lead-free, I still don't think it should come off after two days of play. I am hoping to write the company and ask them about that.
I purchased this for my 6 month old. Hes a little young so I keep the smaller blocks and the base away from him to keep from injury. But its great to watch him grab each piece from the stack and try to put it back.
My 21-month-old son loves this stacker, and it keeps him occupied for long periods of time, so I can cook dinner or clean up. He has gone (in a few weeks) from dumping all the shapes and randomly stacking them back on, to being able to stack the round and hexagonal shapes together in the proper order. He still can't fit the square "jigsaw" pieces together in pairs, but I think it's just a matter of time. He also has one of the classic plastic ring pyramid stackers (I think Fisher Price?) which he enjoyed a lot when younger, but it didn't hold his interest like this does now.
As far as durability and safety: I have no complaints about the manufacturing - it seems very high quality and I expect it will last a long time though we haven't had it long (a few months?) We keep it on the coffee table or another low table (my son stands or sits in front of it) so I don't worry about him falling on the poles, though admittedly this was also a concern of mine with the simpler plastic stacker, since he tended to play with that more on the floor, where it could be a hazard.
One minor complaint (though this is more about my son's usage rather than the toy's fault): he has decided the top round shape is a "ball" and tries to throw it, so it is now "lost" since our floors and furniture can't withstand hard wooden balls being thrown around.
Maybe it's non-toxic but after a half hour of our toddler playing with this - although he enjoyed it - his hands were red and there were red stains on his t-shirt. So its in the garbage now. Is it non-toxic I don't know, though if toy makers used toxic paints for years and lied about them, there's little reason to believe a label that boldly says non-toxic. How many pieces of clothing out there with Gucci labels are not made by Gucci?
My 14 month old loves it and so do i because it's educational. He is at the stage where he loves putting the lids on things, and things on things, wish i had bought this sooner.
My kids love the this toy, they got it for their bday and we now use it for car trips, aside from them now learning how to throw and them throwing them at one an others car seats only a few feet away from one another they are great. I might make them an only supervised toy now that I read someone had to go to the ER because the kiddo put it on their finger. But I mean it seems quite safe and solid to me. My kids usually break toys with in a few months together. So I will update this if it does break as another reviewer stated.
