My 2-yr-old has enjoyed painting with these for a couple of weeks, since receiving them for her birthday. She likes to cart them around the house, even when not painting! The handles are nice and fat, so are easy for her to manipulate. I bought the matching fingerpaint set from Melissa & Doug, so I make her only use the corresponding paintbrush and paintpot with matching colours (less mess and colour chaos!). They're very lightweight - they might crush if something heavy dropped on them. Brush hair is probably cheap quality (I'm no artistic judge of these things), however, for a 2 yr old, who really cares?

We recieved these brushes via mail yesterday and though my 18-month old hasn't yet had a chance to paint with them, he loves holding them and carrying them around. Probably sounds silly to give them 5 stars for that reason alone, but he is so excited about them (the colors, the feel of the brushes on his face, and brushing his cars with them) that in my opinion they are already a great success for us. They appear to be very durable as well.

I love these brushes. I love these brushes. I am so glad that I bought them they are so much easier to clean up after. I recommend these brushes to anyone that wants to paint with their toddler and not get a mess all over the place. I know that I'm kind of taking the sensory play out of finger painting but I don't care. I will do other sensory things with my 2 year old son there are so many other sensory ways to play. These make painting with your toddler CLEAN. I love these brushes. They are perfectly used with Melissa and Dougs 4 color pack of fingerpaints. I taught my son colors by telling him to keep the blue brush with the blue paint, and the red brush with the red paint etc. It keeps your paints from running together and ending up with some sludge like color. They go perfectly with his easel. It also teaches him to be neat. I buy those jumbo Crayola coloring books and instead of just slushing the paint around on a blank sheet of paper with his hands, he tries to paint the coloring sheet. If a little paint gets on his hand he asks it If I could wash it off of his finger. So that he can proceed with his art. If I could recommend only one thing for a toddler parent it would be to introduce your child to painting with these brushes rather than slushing paint around with their hands. It will hold their attention longer

When I decided to introduce my kids to puzzles at around 16 months, I wanted something simple, safe, and educational. This fit the bill, and has been a wonderful toy that my kids seem to enjoy more and more. I like that each of the pieces will only fit in its own space - a simple idea, but a flaw I have found with many puzzles on the market. The pieces are hefty and durable, and the knobs are easy for my kids to handle. My kids are still in the habit of chewing on toys occasionally, and I've noticed just a little bit of peeling of the color on the pieces - if your child really gnaws on his/her toys still, this may not be the right toy yet. My kids have learned the basic concept of a puzzle from this toy, and they get so excited every time they get a shape in the right hole. I use the puzzle to reinforce/teach shapes, colors, and the concept of "matching" and "turning" pieces until they fit.


My one year old boy just got this toy as a present and loves it. He actually bypasses his other puzzles for this one each time. Since he is only one - I am using the puzzle to teach him colors. When he is older, I can use it to teach him shapes. Really happy with this toy.


I bought this as a gift for my 10 month old granddaughter. The large wooden pieces will be durable and the large knobs will fit in her hands perfectly.


I just purchased this puzzle for my 16 month old daughter who enjoys it. However, the colors of the plug and the hole are supposed to match and they don't. Some are just very different shades and two are different colors altogether (purple versus blue/ orange versus red). Since color recognition is a fundamental aspect of this puzzle, this seems to be a significant flaw.

I also found as another reviewer did that the pieces don't seem to have been removed and cleaned after the jig cut them out. There is particle board dust that seems to keep wearing off with continued use even after it is cleaned with a damp cloth. This can be considered a small trade off for the price of the toy since it is so functional and educational.

However, the only concern I have with the dust is whether there are any chemicals from glue or other materials that might have some degree of toxicity. The pieces are in no way deteriorating of crumbling apart; there is just dust that my daughter found fascinating and began licking off her fingers.

The pegs to hold the pieces are perfect. The pieces fit well, not too loose, not too tight. I really like this puzzle for my daughter and hope that I can get it exchanged for one that has accurately corresponding colors.


This is great as a first puzzle. The large wood knobs are easy for little hands to hold onto, and nothing beats it for teaching shapes and colors. My daughter mastered it and was able to identify the shapes and colors by name all by 20 months (except for one slight difference, she still calls the pentagon a "purple-gon" :) Great quality and durability, should last many-many years!


We gave this puzzle to my 8 1/2 month old for Christmas, and it was immediately a big hit. She loves it because the pieces are easy to grab and the bright simple colors catch her attention. My two-year-old loves it, too, even though it's easy for her. This was a great purchase!


I was looking for a puzzle for my daughter I saw this one. I loved the colors along with the knobs on it. She is still working on getting the shapes right, but seems to like this one. The other puzzles I saw are smaller & I liked the bigger size of this one.


We bought this as a first puzzle for our daughter at about 5 months. She started to remove the shapes almost immediately and loved all the colors. Ultra durable and still a favorite at 17 months...buy ANY of the jumbo M&D puzzles for your little one.


We have a lot of different puzzles for our daughter and this is our favorite. The background is simple and doesn't distract from the placement of the pieces. The wooden knobs are easy for her to grasp and the pieces are simple shapes and colors that she can recognize and easily put where they belong. She's learning colors and shapes from our "play" with this puzzle and doesn't get frustrated with it like she does with some other puzzles. I highly recommend this puzzle.

Our one year old daughter loves this toy! Thanks to this puzzle, she now knows circle, square, and triangle (we're still working on rectangle and oval!). Our daughter often puts the pieces in upside-down, but they always fit! I recommend this puzzle for the big chunky handles and the large simple shapes - perfect for little hands!

This is a great puzzle! It gives a chance to teach both shapes and colors to your little one, all while they are learning to solve puzzles. Behind each puzzle piece is the corresponding color to remind you child which piece shold go where. My son received this puzzle for Christmas, and he plays w/ it so much that I will be buying one for my godson's B.Day this spring.


I bought this puzzle as a filler item so I could get free shipping on a CD. We gave it to our 16 month old son for Christmas. A month and a half later this is still one of his favorite toys, it really keeps his attention. He plays with it more than most of the other toys he got for Christmas. It doesn't light up, make any noises or play any irritating songs so it has become one of my favorites as well. It is a simple wooden toy with bright colors that is very sturdy.


Great idea, good-sized knobs, but no match for a drooling toddler. It would be more appropriate for the wood to be painted directly instead of the use of a sticker. The hand jigsaw work also means that neither the circle nor the square fit very well when turned... making it less educational... unless it's worth learning that overpriced products made with cheap labor produces poor results.


My son loves this. The knobs are perfect size for those clumsy hands to hang on to. He has learned how to fit the shapes in and I think it helps that behind all the shapes is the color that goes there to help with color recognition as well as shape. He has peeled a large portion of the paper off the back (luckily it wasn't the front).


I got this for my son when he was 10 mos. old. He loved it right from the beginning. Now at 11 mos., he can fit all the pieces in and knows where each one goes. It's held up to lots of chewing and is still in great shape. I'll definitely be getting more of these puzzles.


I am a big fan of Melissa and Doug puzzles. My daughter is 14 months and this is a perfect toy for her. Puzzles are great toys to encourage problem solving skills and Melissa and Doug craft puzzles that will endure the test of time with toddlers. Two thumbs up!


This puzzle is great for little ones. Once they have mastered the puzzle placement, you can then work on puzzles and shapes. Be careful with babies putting the pieces in their mouth, the paint chips.

My son got these for his birthday and he seems to like them just fine.


I love that these are triangular and don't roll. Unfortunately, I bought them for a 1 1/2 year old, and she can't press hard enough to make them color on paper - the blue ones do however work nicely on the tile floor! Luckily, they wash off easy. I purchased these from a local retailer and 2 of them were already broken. I would have returned them, but figured they'd end up broken anyway. I was really looking forward to my little girl being able to color with these, but she prefers the SO Big Crayons made by Crayola even if she has to chase them as they roll off the table. I think they'd be great for an older child - we'll try again when she's 2 or so.


My twin g'daughters (five years old) seem to prefer their usual and customary crayons. Still, they were a hit for awhile. I, however, appreciate the fact that these crayons don't roll!! Thanks!!


My toddlers from 15 months - 3 yr. olds love these crayons. They are easy to hold. I love them for their small motor benafits and the fact that they feel like markers so the little ones are not tempted to bite them. They also make bright colors on paper.


These crayons are perfect for a toddler. The case is great for storing the crayons and the color selection is nice. As others have indicated, these crayons write more like colored pencils but that attribute makes them harder and more durable.


These are the best crayons...so far, my kids haven't broken them in half..
very durable...my kids broke the regular jumbo crayons in half in no time.


These crayons seem pretty durable. My 18 month old hasn't broken them yet. My only disappointment is that they are not "soft" crayons. I would say a cross between a colored pencil and a crayon.


While these crayons do break (if, for example, your toddler leaves them on the floor and you or your husband steps on them, they are likely to break) it would take a lot of concentrated effort to break them while drawing. They are very durable.

We also like that:
-Apparently they do not taste as good as Crayola crayons. My dedicated wax-eater took one bite and has not aimed them at her mouth since.
-They do not have wrappers so your toddler does not need you to repeatedly "open it".
-They come in a fairly durable, handy plastic case.
-They are triangular an thus, do not roll (under the couch, for example).

Cons:
-I have a hard time seeing how I could efficiently sharpen these. Advice in the comments section (besides using one of my dear kitchen knives) is welcome...

My daughter has used the Crayola jumbo-sized crayons and while those are not bad, these are definitely superior. In my opinion, they are worth the price.


We bought these crayons for my son when he turned 17 months old. Looking at their design I knew that they would be the perfect crayons for him. The triangular shape keep them from rolling. The size of the crayons are perfect for his little hands. They are extremely durable. My son has broken more than his fair share of those slender crayola crayons, but these are still in perfect condition after 3 months of having them. He has thrown them, pounded them on the table, and even put them inside his toy box and they still are in like new condition.


My two year old broke every crayon we had. Except for these!!! They are hard, but easy to color with, perfect size for toddler and even chewing on them won't break them!!!

Melissa & Doug Jumbo Rainbow Triangular Chalk Set - 10 Sticks

Colorful, chunky, triangular chalk sticks are easy to hold and wont roll away!

These are just regular size chalks in triangular shapes, I am not too impressed. The red and black chalks actually left permanent stains on our Step2 blackboard. I would not buy this product again.


The product description for this item is misleading. Not only are the pieces of chalk NOT 'Jumbo' but they are not designed to be used outside. Those were the two reasons we bought this chalk. :( I do like that they are triangular and don't roll away, but where you would use them, I'm not sure.


It's OK. I bought it for indoor use. My son, who is 2 y.o. brakes the sticks every time he hits the chalk board. He is rough on them, I must say. It's not my complaint though. They are not nice soft chalk pieces that draw well on the board. They are hard and scratchy just like the ordinary outside sticks. On the plus side, they look pretty. They do the job, but not what I expected.


I like Melissa and doug products.
They need to remove "jumbo" from the label. I was surprised at how thin these are.
This is indoor chalk for writing on black boards. If you use it outdoors (and the package says you can) prepare for every piece to be broken.

It's nice that they don't roll.


I gave these to my nieces and nephews for Christmas and by the time the day was over, we had Christmas art all over the driveway - best part, it washes away with a waterhose or the rain, but we left it there to enjoy it. They were so proud of themselves. Great item.
