 "drueke chess set review" 2009-06-05
By J. Lallo (portland, or)
it's a nice set. i love that you can save your game, unlike the other boards that fold in half. the magnets are fairly strong. it's somewhat hard to tell the pawns from the bishops. a tiny dab of white paint would fix that.

the lid doesn't really lock onto the base when you close it. so far this hasn't been a problem, but i feel that it should 'lock' on there somehow.

it's the best travel chess set i've had.

"Convenient, portable Chess Set for people on the go" 2009-05-14
By C. Reichley
Overall, I like this chess set. It is a great value for the price, and fulfills it's purpose, to play chess on travel or on the go. For example, my son and I played chess at a theme park while waiting in line for rides, and my son uses it on the school bus.

Positives: Case is well-built, seems strong enough, my son threw the closed set to me 15 feet away, landing it on the pavement, and the case was not damaged. Pieces really stick to the board, and are short enough you can close the box, put it in your backback, get it out later, and your game is intact. It's big enough to see and move the pieces (I've had tiny sets). But it's small enough to fit in a backback and to hold easily with one hand while moving pieces with the other. Case is attractive.

Negatives: Case and pieces are plastic, and on the aforementioned throw, one of tiny tabs marking a rook broke off. All the pieces are the same size, and the bishops look too much like pawns -- but people have fixed that by putting a dot of paint on the Bishop heads, and we will do that soon.

Biggest negative: The paint is wearing off the black squares, and we've only had this a month or two. The problem is the magnets are strong, and if you slide your pieces, the friction is like sanding the board. You really need to pick up the pieces to move them, but then you have to be careful because if you go too close you can magnetically pull other pieces off the board. I don't know if this is peculiar to our board, because it seems a thin coat of clear finish would have solved this problem. We might contact the company to see if we can get a replacement, but it looks like it would be easy enough to repaint if we had to.

But the paint doesn't come off MUCH, so it's still easy to tell which square is which.

 "Total Disappointment" 2009-05-08
By Eric Barnett
I don't often review a product, but I was so totally disappointed in this 4.5 star product that I felt a need to voice my thoughts. First of all the chess set only came with 7 black pawns. Thus the game was not even playable. Second the peices are plastic crap. It is hard to tell peices apart. Third the lid does not fit tightly on the gamebox (it would fall off if turned upside down) What is the point of the lid if it would not stay on when placed in a backpack, etc. If this product was priced at $9.99 I would not complain much. I returned this junk for a refund.

"Best practice chess set ever!" 2009-04-15
By CEK (Ames, Iowa United States)
I have had many a chess set in my day, and this set exceeds all others in leaps and bounds as far as personal practice is concerned. I often travel to coffee shops etc to study, and this board is ideal! It's very slim and relatively wide (as opposed to a chunky board that folds in half), and is therefore very easy to slip into a bag where another chess set might be awkward. The beauty of not having to fold it in half and pack the pieces inside to transport it is that you can have a position set up, close it up and take it somewhere else, and resume your study without having to record the position or reset-up the board.

The magnets in this board are UNBELIEVABLE. You can carry this board, fully set up in some random position and sitting completely on its side, in your bag for days and not a single piece will shift. In fact, you can shake it up in all directions and not a piece will move a millimeter! That's where this board really shines, and why it's invaluable for personal study and for travel. The pieces are also very distinct (I don't know about you, but I HATE it when the bishops look like pawns and the knights look like blobs), although there were some plastic bits sticking off the pieces from the molding process when I got the board, which I easily trimmed off with a small scissors. I also glued the magnets onto the bottom of the pieces, although it didn't seem that any pieces were in danger of becoming unseated. My only issue is that it can be hard to tell the bishops from the pawns from the top, and so I used a sharpie marker and white-out to opposite-color the tips of the bishops, which easily remedied the problem. I have a friend (for whom I bought this board) who didn't off-color the bishop tops, and he's always blaming his losses on mistaking an enemy bishop for a pawn. ;)

Now onto what I don't like about this board: Because the board has a lip, and the pieces are short (so that you can close the lid with them set up), it can be hard to get a horizontal view of the board, which I like to be able to do. You're much more limited to looking at the board from above, although you get used to it and I wouldn't consider it a hindrance to study. I will play my friend who has this board on it, since we're both used to it, but I might feel like I had an advantage playing someone unused to the board. Of course, it's not a big deal and you absolutely could use it for a game board if you wanted. I also don't like that when the pieces are around the edge of the board (I usually stick them there when they're captured), the top doesn't sit right (although it closes and stays closed fine, it just sits slightly askance). On my friend's board, some of the white pieces are slightly different colors, as if they came form 2 different batches, although all my pieces match.

Overall, I LOVE this board, would recommend it to ANYONE, and would be personally insulted if you didn't buy one immediately. ;)

"Nice for travel, but you won't use it for anything else" 2009-04-08
By Mark D. Jones (Huntsville, AL United States)
Bought this for my kid for Christmas based on all the good reviews. Got to wonder if they got a different version of the game than we did.

Its nice you can close the lid and later resume your game.

What isn't nice is that the paint sticks to the magnets better than to the board surface. The Bishops and pawns are almost identical, and the pieces are ultra cheap (the top edges of the rook break way too easily)

Saw a different set at SupernationalsIV for last week for $3 that has all the features of this set, and NONE of the drawbacks. The $3 set was smaller, fits in a shirt pocket, could be closed and game resumed later etc....

Also, it doesn't label the ranks and files, so recording your game is more difficult.

Not worth the price.

 "Fun for ALL ages." 2009-05-14
By LMK (Netarts, Oregon)
I have purchased 5 sets of the Magformers now. I have 6 grandchildren ranging 2-11 and ALL of them are drawn to these Magformers like little magnets themselves. The creativity and learning that comes from playing with these is wonderful. As a retired elementary school teacher, I highly recommend Magformers for all ages of children. One set is not usually enough to be super creative with, so I suggest getting as many as you can. I store them in a plastic storage box and the children know tight where to find them and where to put them away to. If you put them out and show them what can be done with them....leave them alone...and watch the magnificent creative play begin. It will amaze you and them also.

Great product, the recommendation I have is that you need several sets to make anything big or for more then 1 child. All of my children from ages 3-11 love these and they are still the most played with toy since Christmas.

"A special toy for a special Boy" 2009-03-11
By Garry C. Burgess
My autistic son LOVES this toy. As you can imagine buying toys for special needs children is difficult because they won't play with them "like they should". With this toy there is no "right" way so he is very happy and not frustrated. Plus the magnets snap together with a satisfying click that I think he really enjoys."

 "Great building toy!" 2009-01-07
By R. Tokunaga (Waipahu, Hawaii)
My 4-year old son plays with magformers all the time at preschool so I decided to purchase one for home. He can spend alot of time building shapes and objects with these. I would have purchased a bigger set but it gets quite expensive.

"All skeptics should buy this toy! AMAZING" 2008-11-17
By Shopoholic (Nebraska)
I bought 2 sets of these for my 5 yo son. Little did I know that my 2 YO daughter would love them too. Not to mention I enjoy playing with these. They spark creativity and the possibilities of what you can build are endless. My only advice would be to buy the biggest set you can afford. The more pieces the better. This is an AWESOME toy. We have had them for about 6 months now and my kids will be getting more for Christmas this year.

Melissa & Doug Deluxe Magnetic Calendar

Product Description

Teach kids about holidays and the months of the year with this colorful magnetic activities calendar. With a combination of magnets and wood, 140 pieces depict most holidays and childhood activities. Includes a dry erase board. Measures 16" x 12" when closed; 16" x 24" when open.

Customer Buzz
I got this calendar to use also as a magnetic board for the alphabet magnets that we already have. The board works fine, but the enclosed magnets were stuck on the board and was hard to come off initially. And when they did, they left marks on the board.

I guess this may be due to storage condition (got this via Amazon/FatBrain).. but otherwise the calendar is fine.

Customer Buzz
I agree with the other reviewers that this is a great, functional, educational toy. I also agree that it would have been nice to have had a few different tiles, and the lower magnet 'storage' slate is somewhat impractical. A little cloth bag, or a magnetized back to the calendar would have been more helpful.

My main criticism is that the magnets are not very strong. It's easy for the pieces to be knocked off.

Overall, however, it's a great idea, and kudos to Melissa & Doug for coming up with such a fun toy!

Customer Buzz
We learned this really cool song in pre-school called "days of the week", so when I saw this magnetic calendar I thought perfect, and it was. Every day when we are getting ready we sing our song and put up the new day. I then have him repeat the day of the week and month. What better way for him to have fun by learning his day's of the week.

Customer Buzz
my little girl love to work with this calendar every day and it has helped her learn all the months and special days in the year

Customer Buzz
We bought this for our 4 year old to help him with his concept (or lack thereof!) of time. He likes moving the numbers around, that he can see what's coming, and that he gets to be a part of the "planning" process. :-) My only complaint is the lack of blank tiles. You get ONE magnetic chunk to write your own special ocassion on. There are no tiles for sibling birthdays, so if you have more than 2 children, you'd have to just write, "Sibling Birthday" instead of "T-Rex's Birthday." There DOES seem to be a diversity in the tiles and it seems like all the major holidays are included. I just wish they had more room for individuality!

Customer Buzz
We'll be able to use this calendar for the next 4 years+..it comes with 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 year magnets, but you could really use it forever without the year on there. It has magnets for tons of different holidays and occasions, including "Sunny Day", "First Snowfall", "Birthday Party", "Birthday" and even a blank magnet you can draw on.

Customer Buzz
The magnets are easy to pick up and use for my 4 year old. However, I wish that there were more blank tiles to write in our own activities.

Customer Buzz
This is such a perfect learning tool for children. The product is very well built and is easy to use and can not only teach them the days of the week, but months and the ability to manage their day to day duties and obligations. Very happy with this product.

Customer Buzz
My son is fascinated with numbers and time. He was so excited to get this calendar. Every day we he is able to tell me the day of the week, date, month, and year. He is only 3 years old. He knows how many days each month has, all the major holidays, family birthdays, and plots out his week every Sunday by putting what days he goes to school, what days he plays soccer, football, or baseball. He puts the type of weather on days that is sunny, rainy, snowy, or windy. It's great. My friends at work call him my blackberry because he's so "on it" about the date.

Customer Buzz
My 3 year old daughter received this calendar as a gift last year and has absolutely loved it.
I am a Montessori teacher and childcare provider and have been told by parents of my students (all ages 3, 4 and 5) that they love doing the date/calendar every day at school, they try to do calendar time on pretend calendars at home.
So this year's gift for my six little students will be the Melissa and Doug magnetic calendar, I know they will love it!

Melissa & Doug Deluxe 10-Piece Magnetic Fishing Game

Product Description

Can you "catch" all these colorful sea creatures, then put them back where they belong' Redesigned artwork brings new life to these much-loved, creative magnetic games. Includes beautiful board with 10 magnetic pieces and magnetic wand. Measures 11.8" x 9.1" x .6".

Customer Buzz
my 21 month old son loves this puzzle, he was able, immediately, to "fish" the pieces and put them back. Worth the money!!!

Customer Buzz
Our 17-month old enjoys the fishing part a lot, but not ready for the puzzle yet so she can fish out the pieces with the fishing pole but cannot put them back in the right slot. It is very funny to watch her fish as she figured out how to cheat by grabbing the magnet and attaching it to the metal button by hand when she loses her patience to hold the pole steady for the magnet to catch. Hopefully we will get lots of uses out of this toy as she grows into the puzzle part. The toy is rated for 3+ but not sure if it will be too easy to hold her interest by then. It is a very nice game nevertheless and we are glad we got it for her.

Customer Buzz
The price was good, the construction was OK but don't expect a handcrafted piece of art. The kids like it, it look pretty safe so it keeps them occupied and lets then learn some shapes!

Customer Buzz
I bought this toy for my 1 year old son to help with his eye and hand coordination and fine motor skills. He absolutely loves this toy and will keep fishing until he catches all the fish in the puzzle. I like the fact that it is very hard to take the puzzle fish out unless you "fish them out" with the supplied magnet fishing pole. A great learning toy for a great price.

Customer Buzz
Use the pole to fish the fish out then put them back by hand. Coordination, small motor muscle exercise, beautiful to look at, and fun! Kids learn shapes, colors, sorting, matching and think they're playing. Our only problem was remembering where we put the pole! but you can still use it without. This is beautifully drawn and a lot of fun. We're glad we got one.

Customer Buzz
My 1 1/2 year old son loved this toy at a friend's house. I enjoyed helping him work on it as well. But when I ordered this newer version with more cartoon-like fish we are both disappointed. I think the fish and sea creatures look silly, and I can no longer name them. I definitely prefer the more realistic looking sea creatures on the older version and my son seemed more attracted to them as well.

Also with this newer version the puzzle pieces are more difficult to put back because it isn't immediately clear which way is up. I'm sure when he is older it will be easier for him. (I realize he is younger than the recommended age).

He does still enjoy "fishing" out the pieces. It's still a good toy, but we are going back to the older version.

Customer Buzz
This sturdy wooden game is exceptional for hand eye coordination and toddlers love it. It has been dropped countless times and no wear is visible. Many times a day it is played with and still enjoyed as a toy that is worth the buy.

Customer Buzz
I bought this for my almost-2 year old niece. She and her 4 year old sister both enjoy playing with it and, according to my sister, it provides some welcome QUIET play time (so many toys lately come complete with loud, electronic NOISE).

Recommended!

Customer Buzz
The kids love using the magnet fishing pole and discussing their "catch". The only problem I have encountered is how much the 3 yr old loves to twirl the fishing pole causing much potential for disaster.

Customer Buzz
My fifteen-month old loves this game. He concentrates really hard to get the fish on the magnet. It's great for teaching him patience, and fine motor skills, and he is proud of himself when he catches a fish!

Melissa & Doug Deluxe Wooden Magnetic Pattern Blocks Set

Product Description

An appealing combination of magnets and wood, this pattern block set will keep kids engaged and entertained. Includes 120 colorful geometric magnets to replicate the 12 included geometric pictures. Measurements 14.5" x 12" x 1.5".

Customer Buzz
Megnets are very light it is easy to move they don't stay on strongly. the paper whole set is not made as strong and durable as I thought they should for a three years old......not the best ideas for cars since megnetic pieces do not stay on well and it will fall in your car. They should have use more megnetic power in it.

Customer Buzz
The magnetic blocks, the well chosen patterns, and the variety of ways to use them make this an appropriate toy for even special needs early childhood. The range of learning skills encoumpassrs logic, art, math, problem-solving, and creativity, while being just plain fun! The storage is handy and makes it easy to pack and unpack the blocks, patterns and board. My two-year old special needs grandchildren enjoy playing and learning--each in their own way. Mom enjoys the easy pack up and storage.
Thanks again, Melissa and Doug!

Customer Buzz
I bought this for my granddaughter and she loves it. For beginners, you place the different shapes on the board where the imprint of the shape is. As they get better, you can create your own pictures using the various shapes. It's magnetic so it all stays in place. Great for the car.

Customer Buzz
The product is good but I wish it would have circle shapes also.
It's nice but for some reason my daughter doesn't play with it. She likes other puzzles and pattern sorters a lot but this one is not a hit for some reason. Maybe it's not age appropriate. My daughter just turned 3.

Customer Buzz
This is a great toy. I find myself making patterns with it too. I really like that it's magnetic. The pieces stay in place perfectly, so no one gets frustrated if the board gets moved. It comes in a very nice storage container thats durable and portable. Great item!

Customer Buzz
When I ordered this puzzle there was a caveat that children under 3 would be confused. Well, my granddaughter loves this. Yes, you must sit down with your child and help her learn how to do use the puzzle pattern blocks. My granddaughter picked it up quickly and knows the names of most of the puzzles. She has begun testing new forms that are not laid out for her. There are a lot of pieces, so a child this young will need some help picking them up; hey, isn;t this what all grandmas do? Great for teaching geometric form names.

Customer Buzz
My son is almost 4. He got this for Christmas along with LOTS of other gifts. It is a nice winding down toy for him when his younger siblings are napping and mom is working. He enjoys this toy.

Customer Buzz
I just got this for my kids, age 4 and 2, and they love it. It is very helpful that they are magnets, they don't move around as much so the kids don't get as frustrated. The carrying case is great to keep everything together. We are also starting to homeschool our 4 year old and this is a great math activity as well.

Customer Buzz
What child doesn't like magnets? This is a great toy for fine motor skill development. The blank magnetic board allows free form work and the design cards allow a child to form a picture. Great for girls, maybe not for boys.
