"My 3 year old love it!" 2009-11-03
By Amber Roling (Council Bluffs, IA USA)
We got this for our daughter for her third birthday. She loves it. It takes okay pictures.

It does what I expected it to do. It's use to use and is durable. If your looking for a camera to take great picture this is not the camera for you.

 "Huge Disappointment" 2009-11-02
By E. Latshaw (Florida)
We bought this camera for my son last year as he is really taken with photography and wanted to take his own pictures. We have had good luck with Fisher-Price products, so crossed our fingers and hoped it would work.

It doesn't. It doesn't to the point and degree that my son is now using my old Canon PowerShot as his camera.

The picture quality is acceptable for a three to five year old photographer, but the camera stopped turning on within six months of use. It only reluctantly gave up the pictures on the SD card. It ate batteries like crazy and simply never lived up to expectations for him or for me.

I was incredibly disappointed with this product and it makes me hesitant to buy ANYTHING Fisher-Price.

"If only the pictures were better" 2009-10-24
By Jennifer (Louisville, CO)
My 4-year-old son loves this camera, but grows bored quickly because even he recognizes that the pictures are terrible. He calls them all "bright." The flash is always on and always makes the pictures seem white, no matter what. He takes great pictures with my camera, so even though I bought this so he could have his own, indestructible version, he still wants mine.

"It's fun but leaves alot to be desired..." 2009-10-03
By teener175 (broomfield, co)
I have 2 boys, ages 4 and 2 at the time of purchase, and they loved this camera. The only problem is that the pictures taken really look awful! I wasn't expecting too much but i was at least hoping 1 out of 10 pictures could be something my kids would be proud of and no such luck. Also, the button being on the front and not the back was something my 2 year-old had major issues with, only recently, and he is now 3, has he gotten the hang of it. My kids probably would have loved this more if the pictures were a little better. I do have to admit that they have taken quite a beating and still work fine "Kid-Tough" is definitely accurate.

 "Battery hog" 2009-09-26
By Michael Shortino (Florida)
I am amazed that this camera is getting such great reviews. I have never left an on-line review before but feel I have to balance what I've read so far. It honestly makes me lose faith in on-line reviews and I will take them with a large grain of salt in the future. There's no question that this camera is durable, but that's about where the positives end for me.

The main problem is that the batteries last for about a day. If you buy this camera, buy stock in a battery company the same day. I'm not exaggerating when I say expect about a day out of the batteries. The other problem, as some people have said, is that the picture quality is HORRIBLE. I realize it's a toy, but come on! With technology these days they could have done much better. They are all very grainy and 9 out of 10 are out of focus.

I think you'd be better off buying a used "real" digital camera or even a cheap new one and let your kids play with that if they're 4 or 5 or older. When you factor in how much you'll spend for batteries with this you'll probably be ahead of the game.

Fisher-Price Kid-Tough Digital Camera Pink [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging]

Product Description

fisher-price and Amazon.com have teamed up to offer this item in Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging, a recyclable, easy-to-open alternative to traditional packaging. This Frustration-Free Package comes without excess packaging materials such as hard plastic "clamshell" casings, plastic bindings, and wire ties. The Frustration-Free Packaging on this toy eliminates all PVC packaging materials (426.4 sq. in. per individual) and replaces them with recyclable corrugated material. This camera is a perfect way for kids aged three and up to document all their favorite things.

Kids love documenting their world (photo taken with the Kid Tough camera).

Big buttons are perfect for little hands.
What We Think

Fun Factor:

Durability:

(what this means)

The Good: Durable, easy way for kids to experience photography

The Bad: May seem bulky in little hands

In a Nutshell: This fisher-price camera really is Kid Tough.
At a Glance

Ages: 3 and up
Requires: Four AAA batteries
Easy to Start Taking Pictures
An adult will need to use a screwdriver to install the four AAA batteries before kids get their hands on this camera. With a textured button on the front that releases the shutter and large buttons on the back that let little hands turn the camera on and off, browse through pictures and delete images, using this camera is so easy it doesn't need to come with instructions.

The fun, brightly colored body helps distinguish this camera from boring adult models, making it an instant favorite.

Kid-Friendly Technology
Kids can pick between using the live view on a 1.5-inch color LCD preview screen or looking through the two-eye viewer when taking pictures. The preview screen also lets kids look at pictures the moment after they take them. With a built-in flash that automatically illuminates darkened scenes, and a shutter noise that makes it easy to know when a picture has been taken, kids are sure to be delighted by their images.

The 64 MB built-in memory stores up to 500 pictures and eliminates the need for handling fragile and expensive memory cards. Two image resolution settings, 0.3 and 1.3 interpolated mega pixels, let kids take plenty of pictures and make 4 x 6-inch prints.

Fun, Durable Way to Encourage Creativity
With its big rubberized grips and sturdy construction, we found this camera lived up to its incredibly durable reputation. Able to easily withstand being dropped again and again and waterproof for 30 minutes in up to three feet of water, this camera can handle the rough reality of active play.

The heavy-duty construction that makes this camera so durable can also make it seem somewhat bulky for little hands, but this won't prevent kids from wanting to take it on all their adventures.

Older children and adults may be disappointed by the image quality, but higher resolutions would allow less pictures to be stored and decrease the amount of fun children have with this camera. Kids quickly find that there's plenty of resolution for exercising creative urges and documenting the wonders of everyday life.

The camera comes with a USB cable so pictures can be downloaded quickly and easily for editing and viewing. It is compatible with Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Apple Mac OSX, Apple Mac OS9 and requires a USB port 1.1 or higher for computer connectivity.

All other virtues are of little value when you have a camera that takes terrible pictures! Who cares how easy to use or durable the thing is if you can't use it for the primary intended use of taking pictures! Don't waste your money.

My thoughts:

*Buttons are easy to use but not too easy. It's hard for a kid to accidentally turn it on (you have to hold down two buttons at the same time) or accidentally delete pictures (you have to confirm a delete by pushing the delete button a second time. It can be a little hard to find the shutter. Sometimes I have to guide my daughter's finger to it.

*The picture quality is low but it's good enough. Really what kids want is to look at their pictures on the little LCD screen and the picture quality (and size of the screen) is perfectly fine for that. The quality of the pictures is also good enough to look at on a computer. We haven't printed any and likely won't waste the money (because the size of the picture would look like garbage), but my daughter has grown up in the era of digital photography and we don't even print 99% of our own photos. The only people we print photos for anymore are computer illiterate grandparents. Looking at pictures on the computer is normal for her and it makes her happy. Every now and then, she accidentally shoots a picture good enough for me to use on facebook. It's the whole infinite number of monkeys with an infinite number of typewriters thing.

*The image on the view finder doesn't match what's being photographed but the image on the LCD screen does. The view finder just shows the top half. Most kids take pictures haphazardly and it doesn't matter, but it's annoying when you're actually trying to teach a kid about photo composition. We taught her to size up her photos using the LCD screen. Most of the time she takes pictures of people's belts instead of their faces, but again, an infinite number of monkeys with an infinite number of typewriters.

*It eats through batteries like no tomorrow. Buy a charger and rechargeable batteries right away. We found that we needed to replace the batteries almost after every use.

*I paid about $40 for it and I hemmed and hawed over whether that was a fair price until my mother pointed out to me that when I was a kid, I had a polaroid instant camera (yea instant gratification!!!) and while the camera was cheaper, the film was $8 per package. So when I took pictures of people's belt buckles, it grated on her nerves. The expense of the film prevented her from buying more film which prevented me from using this camera. If you buy this camera and rechargeable batteries, you're done. The knowledge that the initial expenditure is going to be it means I pull this camera out regularly and encourage my daughter to use it. I still wouldn't have paid $60 for it, but for $40 considering it's digital, it's a fair deal.

This is such a great idea! My DD loves this camera...unfortunately the camera doesn't love her :) After the first 3 weeks, the camera wouldn't turn on. So, we replaced the batteries several times, and nothing! So, I contacted Amazon, and back it went! We received the new camera, and all was fine until just recently (6 mos later). Same problem!!!! Now it's too old, no returns accepted.

Camera has a pretty large memory - quality is pretty poor, however can keep a little one busy for a long time! Be prepared to replace batteries regularly with use, as it tends to eat them up! Unfortunately the quality is not made to last a long time. Not sure it is worth the $$ just to be used a few short months.

Customer Buzz
I bought this item for my little one's 3rd birthday by mistake. It wasn't until after my child opened it and was playing with it that I realized that it didn't play any games or have any other cool functions, as the model that I had INTENDED to buy does. The only thing it does is shoot pictures and is water resistant. I was especially unimpressed with the quality of the images on the viewfinder.

For the price I paid for it, I didn't feel like I was getting much product for my money. After all, for only five bucks more, I could get another model by vTech that shoots pictures, has an SD card slot for additional memory, in-camera photo editing, shoots movies, can have sounds clips added to photo files, and has three fun preschool games!

I couldn't get the batteries out of this Fisher Price model and put it back into its packaging to return to the store fast enough! For the lack of features on this camera, it really should be in a lower price point.

Customer Buzz
Our daughter uses our digital camera and we thought this would be a nice substitute. Wrong. If your child already uses a digital camera then this one is a waste of time. The quality is ridiculous. I don't even want to download the pictures to the computer as I think it would be a total waste of time. I've thought about putting it on craigslist but that would probably be a waste of time too. Looks like the landfill for you... Kid Tough!

Customer Buzz
My 5 year old daughter loves this camera and I love that there are blue and pink so that my son can have one too. My 3 year old son has trouble pushing the button to take pictures and the batteries run out very quickly which is frustrating for all. Loved the frustration free packaging as I couldn't get the camera out of the fisher price packaging the first time!

Customer Buzz
My 3-year old loves the idea of taking pictures, but is frustrated by the hard-to-push shutter button, so quickly loses interest, preferring instead to manipulate the buttons in the back. I wish the power button was as hard to press as the shutter. We'd find it a much more enjoyable experience.

Picture quality is what you'd expect from a camera suitable for the pre-k set, and it is very tough. If something happened to it, I would do a lot more real-world testing before buying a different model or brand. Would not purchase this camera again.

Customer Buzz
I bought this camera for my daughter who is 2 1/2 and she loves it. She has a lot of fun taking pictures. Regular batteries don't last to long but the rechargables are better. It takes good pictures unless you move it to soon. This camera seems very durable. The double veiw finder is great for kids. Would recomend to anyone with young children that wants to take pictures by themselves. Amazons frustration-free packaging is a great thing, alot easier to open.

Customer Buzz
When we purchased this camera we were really looking forward to my 3 year old daughter using it.
However:
1) It goes through alkaline batteries in about 20 min and doesn't work on Ni-Mh rechargeable batteries at all.
2) The resolution is appalling. The technology is about 10 years old.
3) It's very difficult for little fingers to operate because it's quite hard to press the button down to take pictures
4) It takes about 5 attempts to turn it on because each time you do it turns itself off again, even with brand new batteries.
5) It now won't turn on at all and it's less than 2 months old and hasn't been abused by may daughter

Don't buy this it's a complete waste of money

Customer Buzz
We bought a blue and a pink one - they love them and photograph everything and everyone. Downfall is can't down load to MY computer because my operating system is too old . . . so not sure of the actual quality of the photos taken. You can see the photos on the screen on the camera, but they are very grainy and dark.

It is excellent gift for my granddaughter's 2 years old and she really loves it very much and worth to have it for ride travel.

Customer Buzz
My daughter received one of these for her 2nd birthday and the DVD player quit working after about 2 weeks. We were able to exchange it for another one, and it only lasted for about 1 week before it stopped working. The problem with both was that it quit reading/recognizing the DVD's and would not load the movies. The product is a great design and concept, but unfortunately it is not a reliable product. Upon contacting Fisher Price they have offered to take the unit back and provide us with a full refund of the retail price. We highly appreciate their customer service, but are disappointed with the product itself.

Customer Buzz

Customer Buzz
I like the durability of the fisher price dvd player, but
if disks are scratched at all they will not play. It is
very sensitive. The dvd player is very easy to open and
does not lock so kids can easily take out the disks.

Customer Buzz
This is an awesome dvd player for children. The price is too high. Should be in the 70's to 80's price range just like any other portable dvd player. My kids told me that it was very cool. I just hope it last longer than 6 months. It is educational only if you put an educational movie in it, like we have done.

Customer Buzz
I bought this for my 5yr old,my 1 year old gets a hold to it and slams it all over the floor and it still works.

Customer Buzz
My 2-1/2 year old daughter recevied this dvd player, brand new, for Christmas. It never left the house & usually just sat next to her on a couch cushion in the evenings while her dad & I watched our shows on the big tv. We purchased 8 new dvds to go with this, the accessory kit & the carry bag (which never has been used) but after only 2 weeks the player won't read disks anymore. Brand new disks, nope. Older disks, nope. Cleaned disks, nope. This product has been the biggest waste of money yet. And trust me, we've spoiled this little girl (our first daughter) rotten. Just as an aside, the headphones that we bought with it don't stay connected if you move even slightly. And honestly, asking most adults to sit like Buddha for 30 minutes is lunacy, much less a toddler.
As for the screen being small? Yes, but it's for a toddler not an adult so that really wasn't a concern. The plus side was that the picture was actually clearer than we expected. The one really irritating thing about this product (while it worked) was that the buttons to turn up the volume & the brightness were very accessible to the child & make an obnoxiously loud beeping noise when pushed. This happens to be our daughter's favorite & now only way to play with this large, useless lump of plastic. Great while it worked, but who wants to pay [...] + every 2 weeks?

Customer Buzz
This is an excellent durable toy. The only real problem being it is too easy to open and remove the disc. As the child gets older this problem will improve.

Customer Buzz
I got this for my 4 year old daughter and she Loves it so much. It is so easy to use. She loves that she can do it herself. It takes regular dvd's that you would use in your own dvd player. We have not had a single problem out of it. I would recomend this toy to anyone.

Customer Buzz
I did not get the usage I expected from this product. My daughter was so excited when we got it but she gave up on it when it won't play her favorite dvds. In short it skips a lot.
I waste of money
