We bought this for my oldest son when he was 4, he's now 7 and has of course grown out of it...but...he's taught my 3 year old and he now loves it too. There are very few toys that are made now that last more than a few months without breaking, or being put in the donate/what a waste of money pile, but I'll tell you this products been through 2 boys, and is still holding it's own. I'm sure your children will love it too =)
When I ordered this game, I thought it was for up to age 8. It really is for up to age 5 or 6. It is good for my 5-year-old, but boring for my almost 7-year-old.
Purchased for my 4 year old son for Christmas (also have 2 year old daughter). My husband and I love the original so couldn't wait to play this version with them. Son had a blast figuring out strategy, and daughter was so excited to find the animals on the board. We teamed up boys against girls to help the kids learn how to play and we had a wonderful time all together. Looking forward to playing it on teams when our friends come over with their two kids!
My 3 year old son got this for Christmas from us last year and LOVES playing it. We could easily play this game every day and not tire of it. The best part is that it is fun for both adults and kids to play together. You don't feel as though you have to 'play down' to the kids. You will actually find yourself getting into it as much as they do.
We bought this game about a year ago for our young 4 year old. We started playing with one adult on "his team" to help him. He caught on pretty quickly and now, almost 5, plays on his own. On a rare occassion, he puts a chip in a place that isn't very strategic, and I will just ask "is that where you want to put that?". This is a great game for kids to start learning strategy. He still gets really excited when he gets a dragon or unicorn card and plays it almost immediately, instead of saving it for when he really needs it. This is definately his favorite game and he has won on numerous occassions against me, my husband and his 13 year old brother!
My children have enjoyed playing this board game for several years now. It has held up well. It is easy enough to play that children over a wide range of ages can play together. Great for family nights, too.
My son got this for Easter and asks to play several times a day. Like some other reviewers mentioned, he does not get the strategy part of the game as far as blocking other opponents or choosing the animal that would allow him to get 4 chips in a row. He will instead just pick which ever animal card he likes best from the 3 he has in his hand and put the chip on that one, and his chips are all spread out. I always try to explain why he wants to choose certain animals so that he can get 4 chips in a row to win. It is also confusing to him as he thinks he can only play on the side of the board with the animal facing him... I don't know why it was made that way. He also doesn't grasp the unicorn and dragon concept as far as being able to take a chip away or put one anywhere when he gets these cards... he is always looking for a unicorn or dragon on the board. I think the free spaces are silly as you only need 2 chips with these (3 total in a row with the free space) and they are in all 4 corners, so it makes the game too quick.
I like the idea that my son is learning some new animals and identifying the pictures with the board. I like the concept of the game and I think he will get the stragey in time. He enjoys it, so as a Mother, that makes me happy too.
Our whole family enjoys this game. My 4 yo doesn't quite get all the strategy, but that is the appeal. The game grows from something simple like matching to more complex strategy, watching the board, and using wild cards. Much more enjoyable then the typical 4 yo game. It is really not completely appropriate for a 4 yo, but can be adjusted easily. My son got it for Christmas and is already figuring out the game on a whole new level. Well worth the money!
This is a great game. The kids love it and the adults don't mind playing, too.
Wonderful gift to give ages 4-6. Well worth every cent.
I got this game for my 3 year old for xmas. Her 5 and 6 year old sisters are starting to understand more board games and this sounded perfect for her. My opinion is that it is no where near appropriate for someone under 5-6 years old. My 3 and 5 year olds are of normal intelligence and my 6 year old-brilliant. The 3 year old works to match the animals and doesn't always remember she's suppose to be putting 4 in a row. She CERTAINLY doesn't understand the idea of strategy of putting chips near other animals to set-up possible rows. The 5 year old knows that, but doesn't grasp the strategy of blocking anyone or removing someone's chip that would prevent them from winning.
I know i'm their mom, but I don't think they are any less than normal in their understanding of games and the goals of games that are age appropriate.
Its just my opinion that this is wholly misrepresented in its age-range. Otherwise it's a great game. I gave it 3 stars only because the children withing the age-range stated aren't able to understand it and I wouldn't buy it again. We've just had to make up our own rules so the kids can still 'play'.
