I was pretty excited to get this. We have many M&D toys, and we usually love them. In most cases it seems the designers think of everything. That does not hold true for this product. Other reviewers have covered these these points, so I'll try to be brief.
1. The chalkboard is terrible. I will be buying some chalkboard paint to make it usable (adding to the cost).
2. The white board does not wipe clean well. It stains easily from all the dry erase marker types I have tried, so I have to use the dry erase spray (again more $- though I may try the rubbing alcohol someone else mentioned).
3. I wish the white board (or chalkboard) was magnetic. It would really add a lot to the toy and I'd have all the letters off my fridge!
4. The height is not very easily adjustable, and it does not seem so easy to fold though I haven't really tried yet.
5. The plastic trays seem to add a lot to the stability, but they do not seem to be made from very strong plastic. I am hoping they will last a while, but I'm not too optimistic. If/when they break, I think we'll have to add some wood to reinforce it.
Overall, I think I could have found a better easel. The chalk and whiteboard on the IKEA easel work very well (know others that have it), but I don't know whether or not IKEA's is magnetic. Some of the plastic ones are and I'd really like that feature. If there was a way to add that myself (like chalkboard paint) I might consider it. You may want to shop around more. It's a large item, so more versatility is always better if it's going to be taking up a lot of space.
Overall, my biggest complaint is that it has 2 poor quality writing surfaces. Without the paper, it's not very usable. I hope this helps.
Suprisingly easy to assemble and my son love's it! I did a lot of research and it is amazing how expensive these can get. This eisel is very inexpensive and definately worth it.
I got this for my granddaughter, (the budding young artist!). She absolutely loves this easel and so do I. It was very simple to put together, adjusts in height as your child grows, and it's very sturdy and durable. She uses it every day since she received it. I am very very pleased and highly recommend it. PS Dont forget to get the companion set of paints, brushes, earaser, etc. etc.!
Directions were simple - 8 year old assisted. Flexible for different heights of children. Primarily used by 2.5 year old.
I love this easel. Not only has it helped my two year old learn to hold a crayon and paintbrush better now she has begun to trace letters and shapes too. My five year old loves to paint and paints words to help with his reading practice. He also likes to write words from his books during homework time. They learn and lot and don't even realize how much they are truly learning...for them its just fun.
The main problem is when you use the paper roll. It is difficult to feed the curled paper through the top. Then, they gave, or it came with, clips to hold the bottom. I will modify this and have both top and bottom spring loaded...springs between the top wood strip and bottom wood strip, so you can pull it out, feed the paper and let it spring back to hold the paper. It is awkwardly designed and would take very little to improve this item. I paid twenty five at Amazon a few months ago. That is the most it is worth. My daughter loves it. She paints and we do letters/numbers...abc's on the chalkboard.
I recently bought this product for my 7 year old...and she LOVES IT!!! After reading the reviews before i purchased the product gave me a little worry in regards to the chalkboard...but when reading further reviews i found one with the clue to making the chalkboard function as it should without having to buy chalkboard paint as some people have had to do. First, if your child has sidewalk chalk, i would recommend using this to prime it, simply because it is a more sturdy chalk...cover the entire chalkboard with chalk, then wipe with a papertowel and then use the eraser to completely remove the remaining chalk. To be safe i then repeated the process and then tested the chalk board out...there were no problems with scratching or marks being left in the board as others have reported. The only down side to this is that I would not have known to do this because there were no instructions on how to prepare the chalkboard when I received it. As for other issues that people were having about children removing screws and taking it apart easily, I agree. This is something that needs to be monitored if not addressed by the company, because to little curious minds the colors make it all that more interesting to try and play with and screw on and off...I would have to say that the older the child the less this becomes the issue. I would however recommend that when painting that you cover the white board with a layer of paper before the painting begins, simply to avoid bleeding through onto the board. Overall, she has played and played and played with it since it was purchased..a very good investment for artistic young children who love to draw, paint etc...
The easel is adjustable, which was great. It is low enough for a 2 year old! The chalkboard side definitely needs help...it is difficult to write on. It looks great and is sturdy. I love that it has place for the paper roll. Overall, I am really happy with the easel.
A friend purshased this product and was very happy with it. However, we have owned a very similar one from IKEA for two years for half the price. Our IKEA product gets put outside on nice days and has been pretty beaten up, but is still in good shape and very sturdy. If you can't get to an IKEA, the Melissa and Doug product is an excellent choice.
A little disapointed that the chalk board was not real, but laminate. Still it writes fine. Overall we love it!!!
