Bilibo is a toy. A large, colorful toy. With no moving parts, unless you count the children who play with it. Like any toy, it is designed for a certain kind of child with equally certain kinds of parents - creative, imaginative, active children, whose parents understand and support unstructured, unpredictable, non-directed play.

The Bilibo is the mother of the Bilibo Game Box - the very Bilibo Game Box glowingly reviewed here just last month. For children between the ages of 18 mos and 8 years, the Bilibo is something to sit in or on, to rock or twirl or scoot in, to stand on, to wear. It is a water toy and a sand toy and a family room toy. It is a toy for storing other toys in.

Just what this toy means to kids depends on the adult as much as the child. The way you play with your child, the expectations you have, the limits you impose, the other toys you have out for play... all impact the way your child experiences the Bilibo, and you experience your child. Alex Hochstrasser, the inventor of what has become the Bilibo system, comments: "...most children have fun with Bilibo anyways, because that's how they play. They learn much more when they explore and discover things by themselves...I wanted to create a toy that was not gender or age specific but rather grows with the kids and, depending on age and interests, can be used in ever new ways. The closest I had as a role model was probably the card board box."

But it is also true that if adults are present, they influence the child's play, overtly or covertly. Parents need to be careful of their expectations. Even the most gifted children might not immediately take to the Bilibo. They need time with it. Time to explore or not. To kick it around, sit on it, or ignore it. Its presence in their play environment, like the presence of an empty cardboard box, will, in time beckon to them.

The best influence you can have, especially with a toy like Bilibo, is in your willingness to let the child discover and define the toy for herself. For example, from the persepective of a physical therapist who has obviously allowed the child undirected access to the toy, it becomes a multi-purpose tool. The therapist writes:

"I thought I would tell you how much one child I work with enjoys the Bilibo toy. He is 5 and totally blind. He spins quite fast around in it on a hard surface floor. He is able to catch himself with his arms what ever direction he tips over which is helping him with upper body development and balance skills.

"It also cradles small/multi involved children with low tone, very nicely encouraging them in bringing their hands to midline. When a large enough child is in there (and I am supporting the Bilibo not to roll about), rather than arms/hands flopping about at the sides, the arms end up more in the middle of the body, to hold a toy. Of course with experience many of these kids like a bit of gentle rocking to and fro as well."

Alex adds: " the stimulation of the child's vestibular system by spinning and balancing in the shells would be an interesting area where Bilibo shines. (The vestibular and proprioceptive systems play a key role in the development of the brain and reading and writing skills in particular.)"

If you already have the Bilibo Game Box, the big Bilibo makes an ideal expansion component, and vice versa. It's almost a given that children will weave family fantasies around the relationship between the big Bilibo and mini-Bilibos. Then there are the profound discoveries to be made about mini-Bilibo-spinning inside a big-spinning-Bilibo, spinning, perhaps, in a different direction. And what about the Bilibo Pixel? Does it roll and bounce and do even more fun things when it's inside a big, spinning Bilibo?

And if you can afford more than one (child or Bilibo), there's yet other orders of magnitude of games and fantasies, probability and physics, social and biodynamics to explore.

For kids (or parents) who don't yet have a Bilibo, there's an ample collection of inspirational clips on YouTube. On the other had, once your kids start playing with their Bilibo collection, they'll have all the inspiration you need. If you're good, maybe they'll let you play, too.

I read all the reviews and thought there was no way a child would actually play with this. Well, I was wrong. They were purchased for my 9 year old, 15 month old, and my 5 year old niece and every one of them has had a blast playing with them. I do find that they enjoy them more in groups. It is much more fun to spin in circles on the tile floor with a friend. I was surprised to see that my son (15 months) actually played with it. At this point, he pretty much just sits in it and rocks and laughs when he topples over backwards or uses it as a stool, but I think the uses he finds for it will expand over the next few years. So, overall, I'm pleasantly surprised at how much they like it.

As for durability, I think I could drive over this thing with the car and not damage it! They are super durable.

My sister bought the Bilibo for my 18 month old son for Christmas. My first impression was that this is an odd shaped piece of plastic with no real use. Now that we've had it for a couple of months, I now know that this is an odd shaped piece of plastic with one million uses. It is a very durable, hard plastic toy that requires a child's imagination to use it properly. My son and three nieces have used it as a seat, merry-go-round, marble twirler, cat hiding place, stool, helmet, etc, etc. The kids find the uses for it that are amazing. It is very well made. The plastic is thick and it has zero sharp edges. It will last many years. Since the toy is only limited to the child's imagination, I refer to it as the "big cardboard box of the 21st Century." It might have limited usefulness to an adult but can be almost anything to a child.

Our kids (6 and 8) took to the Razor A3 scooters immediately and had a blast scooting around Central Park for hours. They fold easily and are easy to tuck into a stuffed trunk, carry on the subway, take in a cab, keep in a hotel room or small apartment (the scooters, not the kids). The larger wheels are a real improvement over the old smaller wheels. Excellent and highly portable outdoor fun for the paved parts of the planet.

I had to return two scooters. The last one was okay, but not perfect. These scooters are not well made. They click, when you turn the handle bars. The releasing mechanism is also not strong; it was loose.

Razor needs to change the company that is making these scooters for them. The quality is really shoddy.

Amazon was very good at accepting all the returns. I must applaud Amazon, but not the scooter.

We love these blocks. Our daughter started to play with these blocks at the age of four months. She would sit in her peapod and knock them over or just gum them. Later she started to move them from hand to hand. Now she loves to sit and knock them over. They are also motivating her to crawl, because she wants to knock them over so badly. Had it for about 2 1/2 weeks and it's gone. Not saying it isn't durable, but for my daughter who liked to throw the cats in it, it didn't last long. My daughter slept in it more than she jumped in it. It was big but we had the room. I wouldn't say the item was very bouncy either, but maybe with more kids... I would recommend this product if you don't have cats!

BTW, mine did not come with a patch kit, not that I could find the stupid hole anyway.

My 2 1/2 year old son loves to play on the Jump-o-lene. It is perfect way to let my son wear himself out safely indoors, now that the weather has turned colder and rainy. The bottom jumping area can be inflated to a fairly firm surface, which allows him to jump and bounce as hard as he wants without ever hitting the floor underneath. When he is done jumping, he likes to lie down and read books inside it, too.

The Jump-o-lene seems pretty durable, and we haven't had any problems with leaks. The only downside is that it takes about 15 minutes to inflate it even with an electric air pump (and 15 minutes to deflate, too).

Well, we have a very active, "all boy," rough-n-tumble 21-month-old, so we got this for him a couple months ago. We have found ours to be very durable, and have not yet even had to re-inflate it! We added some of those colored balls, too. My son loves "hanging out" in this bouncy. He runs around in it, throws himself around, and laughs like ... well ... a maniac, to be honest. The best part, he can't get hurt! He climbs in and out of it on his own, brings his toys in there with him, and just has a blast. Now with the cooler weather coming, it's going to be nice having this bouncer in the house to give him something to do. Caution ... this is a large inflatable, so consider how much room you have before purchasing. It takes up my whole living room, but it's worth the sacrafice! I really don't have anything negative to say about this item ... especially for the price. Hmmm ... I guess a child could "flop" out of it onto the floor, but with enough supervision, this really shouldn't be a problem. Like I said, my son learned how to get in and out himself at 19 months old, but all kids are different. The walls are just the right height, in my opinion, to keep them in safely. It's a hoot for all of us, and we're a wild bunch over here! I wish I could get in and bounce myself silly! I can easily see a child napping in this thing too ... not mine, of course ... he won't nap anywhere but in his own crib, but it's certainly comfortable and safe enough to let a little one snooze in if he or she is so inclined!

My 8 year old got this for Christmas. My husband tried to set it up, but couldn't find the battery compartment or any directions. I read the package, which tells you where the directions are, between the cardboard in the package. We found the battery compartment and got it going. The family went outside to play it and had a great time. Even Grandma got involved! But we noticed the button wasn't working correctly when pushed. It wouldn't turn off or switch between levels. When we went inside, I tried new batteries, but the ball wouldn't come back on at all after that. So I called Hasbro, who worked with me on the phone to try different things. When none of those worked, they shipped us a new ball. Easy as that! The new one is a lot of fun and has held up well. My kids love it! It's the perfect size to keep in the car for when you're going to the park, or visiting a place that may be boring to the kids. We took it on vacation with us a few weeks ago, just in case the opportunity came up to use it. It gets the kids moving and it's fun!

This CD player arrived in a timely manner and is just what I wanted for my two granddaughters ages 3 and 5. Although it was for the younger one's birthday, they are both enjoying it. The sound is good and the kids have fun with the microphones. It has a handle which is great for moving it around. They listen and sing all the time. This is a good product for little ones.

We bought this product to replace a similar one that had broken. I did quite a bit of research and decided this one seemed to be my best bet.

My 2-1/2 year old likes to go to sleep to music and when she wakes up she often will play in her crib for a while. We put this CD player on a night table next to her crib (we got an AC adapter so no battery worries) and showed her how to turn it on (push the triangle). She loves being able to listen to her favorite CD as much as she likes at night and in the morning.

The buttons are easy to use and the different shapes made it easy for her to learn how to use play and stop (& volume)while letting her know which buttons were for Mommy only (programming, repeat, anti-skip, power, etc.)

Compared to the last one we had this one seems more durable. It is also lighter weight so it's easier to move around when necessary (we take it with us when we travel so she can have her music wherever she sleeps).

We have not used the microphones so I can't comment on those, but if you are looking for a child-friendly CD player this one is great!

I've always thought the Cookie Monster was so cute. My parrots have a small TV in their room and I used to tie balloons to the top of it to keep them from flying up there. But then I discovered that they wouldn't go near stuffed toys. I already had a Cat in the Hat, but he only covered half of the top of the TV. Cookie Monster now sits on the other half.

I don't know if the birds like him or not, but I think he's really cute. And since they have a few Sesame Street DVD's maybe they recognize him. I've posted a couple of pictures on this page.

If you're thinking of getting him for a child, he's really soft and seems pretty durable. I think a child would like him too!

Nice shiny soft and blue about 1 foot long from eyes to feet. Eyes are made of hard plastic and some wiring can be felt lining the mouth under the fur but not overly so. For some he may be a bit small, but for the person I made this a gift was perfect. Only thing is the Gund fur like other Gund bears is prone to changing from soft, shiny and pretty to becoming worn-looking, matted, and dull rather quickly even if cleaned. But no matter because it still looks cute and cuddly even still. This stuffed animal is what I expected from the description. I am a satisfied customer.

I bought this and a V-Smile PC Pal brand new from Toys R Us for my kids for Christmas this past year, and by May both were dead. The PC Pal lasted barely five months, and the Cyber Pocket lasted only three. Within the same week, both units just died - they fail to power on either with batteries or AC Adapter. And now we have seven coasters that used to be game cartridges (fortunately most of them were bought used so the amount of wasted money isn't as bad as it could have been).

Needless to say, the reliability of VTech products is pathetic, to say the least. While they were functional my kids had fun with them, but I'd never throw good money after bad by buying another one.

We bought this camera for my son last year as he is really taken with photography and wanted to take his own pictures. We have had good luck with Fisher-Price products, so crossed our fingers and hoped it would work.

It doesn't. It doesn't to the point and degree that my son is now using my old Canon PowerShot as his camera.

The picture quality is acceptable for a three to five year old photographer, but the camera stopped turning on within six months of use. It only reluctantly gave up the pictures on the SD card. It ate batteries like crazy and simply never lived up to expectations for him or for me.

I was incredibly disappointed with this product and it makes me hesitant to buy ANYTHING Fisher-Price.

I am amazed that this camera is getting such great reviews. I have never left an on-line review before but feel I have to balance what I've read so far. It honestly makes me lose faith in on-line reviews and I will take them with a large grain of salt in the future. There's no question that this camera is durable, but that's about where the positives end for me.

The main problem is that the batteries last for about a day. If you buy this camera, buy stock in a battery company the same day. I'm not exaggerating when I say expect about a day out of the batteries. The other problem, as some people have said, is that the picture quality is HORRIBLE. I realize it's a toy, but come on! With technology these days they could have done much better. They are all very grainy and 9 out of 10 are out of focus.

I think you'd be better off buying a used "real" digital camera or even a cheap new one and let your kids play with that if they're 4 or 5 or older. When you factor in how much you'll spend for batteries with this you'll probably be ahead of the game.

This was the first book and cartridge we bought to accompany our children's Little Touch Leap Pad. It was a great choice! My Kindergartner loves it, even our 3 year old is learning. There are simple instructions to follow along as your youngster learns numbers, colors, food groups, even how different items in the kitchen work. The unit itself is compact and has a convenient carry handle to make this a cinch to take along in the car. Our kids enjoy every one of the activities, which is not usually the case with electronic toys, and they especially love the page where they help dress Linguini from head to toe before he dashes off to work. The voices are the same as the characters in the movie, and the art work is colorful and fun. I am so happy with this set that I will purchase two more as holiday gifts for friend's children.

Crayons! Crayons are great when you get one of those creative urges and just need to draw. Crayons aren't nearly as messy as markers, and they don't need to be sharpened as often as colored pencils. The best part about crayons, though, is that if you don't have a sharpener you can just peel the paper off and keep drawing.

This Crayola set has always been my personal favorite. 64 classic colors including your basics (red, blue, yellow, etc) AND your favorites (macaroni and cheese, tickle-me-pink, etc). As if getting the crayons isn't enough, they throw in a courtesy sharpener on the back of the box. This sharpener is really handy when you're focused on your current work of art and don't have time to get up and walk to a stationary sharpener.

Another bonus about this box, versus something laughable like RoseArt, is the way the rows of crayons are arranged. They implemented the "stadium seating" feature in this box for quick and efficient switching between colors. You won't find yourself digging around in this box trying to find the rogue crayon that fell sideways along the bottom.

My only complaint with this product is that the crayons are not very sturdy. If you push too hard while trying to emphasize something, like a bald man's head with the "peach" crayon, it just might snap in half under the strain. This can be extremely frustrating, especially if you've already ruined a previous box of crayons in this way.

Also, because the crayons are cylindicular in shape you have to be careful where you set them down. A few of them rolled off my desk the other day and ended up under the couch. I didn't realize this had happened until I began vacuuming the next morning. Tickle-me-pink and Scarlet ended up lodged in the mouth of the vacuum cleaner tube, and it took forever to get them out!

One last concern. Crayola says these crayons are non-toxic, but that does NOT mean they are ok to eat. I know it's hard to resist that macaroni-and-cheese crayon (I'll be honest, I took a bite out of mine), but don't let the name fool you. NONE of these crayons taste like their name.

My daughter has some problems with fine motor and I think this is great for her, it would be very hard for her to make a friendship bracelet the old fashion way, she would have a hard time keepting the strings in order but the "wheels" that come with this kit make it so easy for her and I'm sure the crisscross action that she does with the strings help with her cordination. The only problem I have noticed is the colors on the wheels is starting to wear off after she has made only 2 bracelets.

I think this is a good educational game for pre-school and kindergarten age kids. The timed challenges are simple ones such as identifying the 'misfit' in a group of similar objects, recognizing patterns in a a series of objects, and memory match challenges. It might not hold the attention of an older child who has already mastered these skills, but would be great for young children.

We love the Melissa and Doug toys and have bought many. We generally find them to be of good quality construction and durable, as well as engaging and educational.

However, we purchased this and the Africa Plains 24 piece puzzle for our grandson for Christmas. When we removed the shrink wrap and started to separate the pieces, the bottom and top laminate layers on the edges of several pieces immediately peeled and/or snapped off. (One of our grandkids puts everything in her mouth and I could see these puzzle pieces causing a hazard if she picked one up.)

We really like the Melissa and Doug toys and have had great experiences with most of them. I'm hoping that this problem is just a fluke with a bad batch of glue; but this happened with 2 different puzzles. I've emailed them to ask them to investigate.

Another great product from Melissa and Doug. This, and the similar On the Go Wooden Jigsaw, were my 21-month-old son's first jigsaw puzzles, and he loved them on sight! Because these puzzles are made of thick, sturdy wood, there are some not-completely-smooth edges. No biggie -- I gave them a little buffing with very fine sandpaper before I gave him the puzzle.

He worked with the puzzle, with a little help from Mom & Dad, until he had literally memorized it and could put it together lightning-fast. Now, at 24 months, he enjoys putting it together wood-side-up, too, so we're really getting our money's worth with this thing.

One thing to note is that, after much love and enjoyment, the paper is starting to wear at the edges. And my son actually managed to tear some of it off the puzzle in a moment of toddler curiosity. However, contact cement pasted the paper back on and all is well again.

The recommended age is 3+, but I think kids much younger than that can enjoy starting to learn how to work jigsaw puzzles. The look of pride when they figure out how to put them together is priceless!

Interactive Doll Makes Roll-Playing More Fun
The adorable toddler doll comes dressed in a cute T-shirt and a pair of "big girl" panties. She has positionable arms and legs, bright friendly eyes, and curly pigtails and bangs that can be combed with the included brush. The doll comes with her own bathroom accessories: a toilet, sink, and two bathroom shelves that hold the included toothbrush, toothpaste tube, hairbrush, cup, soap dispenser, and towel.

The doll can be extracted relatively easily from the box, but it takes an adult with wire cutters or a pair of tough scissors to do it. Once she and her bathroom accessories are out, you'll need to install fresh batteries: the doll takes 3 AA batteries, as does the bathroom unit.

Press the button on her tummy to get the doll started. She will turn her head from side to side, move her arms up and down, and begin "talking." She has a set of randomized phrases, including, "I'm a big girl!" "Hi, Mommy!" and "Mommy, I love you." And she'll ask your child for help. For example, she'll ask for a drink of water, and when you hold the cup to her mouth, and she'll make drinking sounds. Likewise, she'll say "Time to brush my teeth!" If you "brush" her teeth with her toothbrush, she will make realistic tooth-brushing and gargling sounds.

Using the Potty
The Gotta Go Doll's central feature, of course, is using the potty. Sit the doll on the toilet, and it will sound like she is "going" in the toilet -- and she will talk about the process, too, humming a tune before she "goes," and saying "I really have to go!" or singing "Pee pee in the potty!" and other phrases that will be funny and delightful to a young child.

In the meantime, when the doll is positioned on the toilet, the "water" in the toilet disappears, with the expected "potty waste" appearing in its place. Your child can then flush the toilet. The "water" will reappear, while the toilet makes a very realistic flushing sound. Wash the doll's hands at the sink -- turn the right faucet to hear realistic running-water sounds.

Once the fun is finished, your child can simply lay the doll on her back. She'll yawn, say she is "sleepy," and the doll will enter a sleep mode. Move the doll to "wake" her up. She makes a yawning sound and is ready for play again.

Realistic Play with No Mess!
The realistic sounds and randomized, interactive phrases from the doll make a delightful stimulation for role playing. And we personally were relieved to find that, unlike other "pee pee" dolls, this one doesn't require real water -- and real mess -- to provide realistic, interactive fun.

However, we did find it a little bit difficult to understand some of the doll's phrases -- it took a couple of listens to figure out what she was saying. And our particular doll, unfortunately, makes a tooth-brushing sound immediately after her water-drinking sound, whether you're brushing her teeth or not. But these two minor inconveniences won't detract from a child's enjoyment in taking good care of this little doll.

I bought this for my four year old twins for Christmas last year. My girls don't play with girly toys, so when one of them asked for this doll, I was really excited and didn't hesitate to buy it. Unfortunately, she could care less about the doll. She just wanted the potty to play with her animal toys with. Anyway, the doll and accessories all worked great. I love the frustration free packaging. It's much, much easier to get the toys out. The fact that it's a lot cheaper than buying the doll packaged normally is a big plus. My six year old is a math wiz. This is the first game we have gotten for his Leapster that has challenged him at all. I had read some of the reviews that said it is challenging and decided to give it a try. I am very happy with this game. He is able to maneuver around the different games pretty easily, but the level of the games is pretty difficult. It took him a little while to figure out how to get the game cards, but now is able to get them once he masters the skills. I really feel like he is having to think and retain the information in order to keep going in the game.

Okay, we own a lot of Leapster cartridges. My kids may have tried this out, but they haven't played it much at all.

There are 5 characters, each one associated with a different game. Each game has two levels. In addition to the basic games I describe, there are bonus rounds:

Mr. Incredible: Solve the addition and multiplication problems. The answers are on the heads of a statue. Choose the statue with the correct answer and push or pull it into position. Level 1: The addition problems feature serial addition of three single digit numbers. Level 2: The multiplication problems feature single digit multiplication of two single digit numbers.

Mrs. Incredible: Doors open and close revealing letters to a word. Grab the letters to spell a word before the door closes. They must be grabbed in the correct order. Level 1: The words are about five or six letters long. Level 2: The words are about the same length as Level 1, but they are more difficult to spell because they do not follow the basic phonics rules.

Dash: Pick up blocks to build the correct number. For example, if the number is 605, pick up blocks 600 and 5, put the 600 in the hundreds place and the 5 in the ones place. Level 1: The numbers are three digits long. Level 2: The numbers are four digits long.

Violet: Violet has to find the part of speech in the maze that completes the sentence. Level 1: This level focuses on finding the nouns. An example is "Find the noun that completes the sentence." The sentence is "The ___ throws a robot," and the choices are "ran," "happy," "enemy." Level 2: Find adjectives to complete the sentence.

Syndrome: Help navigate the Incredibles family work together to get through the jungle. Must use some logic, like use Mr. Incredible's strength to move rocks or Mrs. Incredible's stretch to reach across a chasm.

Summary: The games are not bad and they are very educational. The problem I think is The Incredibles appeals to a younger audience, maybe preschool level, and the skills it requires are first through third grade level. They were too difficult for my kids when I bought the cartridge, still too difficult for my now 5 year old; but The Incredibles is considered too babyish by my 7 year old who could now play the games.

One of my kids favorites! I'm buying a replacement copy. I agree these things are durable, I sent one through the wash last month and in the morning it was fine. I agree this one is a bit of a challenge (i.e. frustrating) in parts, BUT the upside of this is that although we lost it a year ago (after having it for over a year) I have no qualms about buying it again (I've been looking at the stores to no avail), for my now almost 8 year old son knowing he'll still have fun with it and my almost 4 year old daughter knowing she'll love it again just because it's the Incredibles! Highly recommended!

Then, after all the trouble, I find that in the 25 minute mode, it only counts down by minutes, not seconds, despite the fact that there are 4 digits available on the display in other modes with countdowns by minutes and seconds. The 25 minute mode is the standard for Scrabble brand game tournaments. For me that's a deal buster. I'm sending the unit back. Fortunately, Amazon makes returns really easy.

Giving this Timer anything less than five stars is unfair!!!

WEIGHT is good before adding batteries and perfect afterwords.

Using this timer is a snap once you get used to the fact you are adjusting a six digit time with a four digit display .

There are several preset functions to this timer allowing you just about as many combinations for timing as there are moves on a chess board.

Function 3C allows you to set the time per move for each player. It is preset to a blazing 5sec per move. When changing the time per move you have to change both players separately. This feature allows one player to be handicapped additional time if necessary. We set our clock to five mins per move in 3C.

Being new to the game I wanted to find out more about timing and rules of chess. WOW there are so many to choose from. All my research concluded that the most important thing is to agree to the rules and timing before the game starts.

Buy this timer, it is thrifty, durable, and with proper care should last a lifetime.

My only regret is that there is no sound only alarm function. (If they had this I'd use it daily in my kitchen.)

LASTLY: Lock your settings after you get the clock the way you want it.

I went looking for a lowest price chess clock I could find, having the opinion that most chess clocks were way overpriced. I decided on this one over mechanical clocks to avoid the annoying tick tock those models can make, especially the cheaper ones. At first I was dismayed by the battery it uses, a more expensive C battery instead of the more common AA/AAA batteries, but as soon as I started using it I loved this clock. Its sturdy, with a wide base so slapping the buttons won't knock it over. Programming the clock is not intuitive, it took me some tinkering before I figured out how to adjust times and get the fisher clock setting. There are also instructions for those who can't figure it out. A green light indicates whose turn it is, a red light indicates who ran out of time. There is also a buzzer, you can toggle these on or off, or choose both.

it's a nice set. i love that you can save your game, unlike the other boards that fold in half. the magnets are fairly strong. it's somewhat hard to tell the pawns from the bishops. a tiny dab of white paint would fix that.

the lid doesn't really lock onto the base when you close it. so far this hasn't been a problem, but i feel that it should 'lock' on there somehow.

it's the best travel chess set i've had.

"Convenient, portable Chess Set for people on the go" 2009-05-14

Overall, I like this chess set. It is a great value for the price, and fulfills it's purpose, to play chess on travel or on the go. For example, my son and I played chess at a theme park while waiting in line for rides, and my son uses it on the school bus.

Positives: Case is well-built, seems strong enough, my son threw the closed set to me 15 feet away, landing it on the pavement, and the case was not damaged. Pieces really stick to the board, and are short enough you can close the box, put it in your backback, get it out later, and your game is intact. It's big enough to see and move the pieces (I've had tiny sets). But it's small enough to fit in a backback and to hold easily with one hand while moving pieces with the other. Case is attractive.

Negatives: Case and pieces are plastic, and on the aforementioned throw, one of tiny tabs marking a rook broke off. All the pieces are the same size, and the bishops look too much like pawns -- but people have fixed that by putting a dot of paint on the Bishop heads, and we will do that soon.

Biggest negative: The paint is wearing off the black squares, and we've only had this a month or two. The problem is the magnets are strong, and if you slide your pieces, the friction is like sanding the board. You really need to pick up the pieces to move them, but then you have to be careful because if you go too close you can magnetically pull other pieces off the board. I don't know if this is peculiar to our board, because it seems a thin coat of clear finish would have solved this problem. But the paint doesn't come off MUCH, so it's still easy to tell which square is which.

I don't often review a product, but I was so totally disappointed in this 4.5 star product that I felt a need to voice my thoughts. First of all the chess set only came with 7 black pawns. Thus the game was not even playable. Second the peices are plastic crap. It is hard to tell peices apart. Third the lid does not fit tightly on the gamebox (it would fall off if turned upside down) What is the point of the lid if it would not stay on when placed in a backpack, etc. If this product was priced at $9.99 I would not complain much. I returned this junk for a refund.

I have had many a chess set in my day, and this set exceeds all others in leaps and bounds as far as personal practice is concerned. I often travel to coffee shops etc to study, and this board is ideal! It's very slim and relatively wide (as opposed to a chunky board that folds in half), and is therefore very easy to slip into a bag where another chess set might be awkward. The beauty of not having to fold it in half and pack the pieces inside to transport it is that you can have a position set up, close it up and take it somewhere else, and resume your study without having to record the position or reset-up the board.

The magnets in this board are UNBELIEVABLE. You can carry this board, fully set up in some random position and sitting completely on its side, in your bag for days and not a single piece will shift. In fact, you can shake it up in all directions and not a piece will move a millimeter! That's where this board really shines, and why it's invaluable for personal study and for travel. The pieces are also very distinct (I don't know about you, but I HATE it when the bishops look like pawns and the knights look like blobs), although there were some plastic bits sticking off the pieces from the molding process when I got the board, which I easily trimmed off with a small scissors. I also glued the magnets onto the bottom of the pieces, although it didn't seem that any pieces were in danger of becoming unseated. My only issue is that it can be hard to tell the bishops from the pawns from the top, and so I used a sharpie marker and white-out to opposite-color the tips of the bishops, which easily remedied the problem. I have a friend (for whom I bought this board) who didn't off-color the bishop tops, and he's always blaming his losses on mistaking an enemy bishop for a pawn. ;)

Now onto what I don't like about this board: Because the board has a lip, and the pieces are short (so that you can close the lid with them set up), it can be hard to get a horizontal view of the board, which I like to be able to do. You're much more limited to looking at the board from above, although you get used to it and I wouldn't consider it a hindrance to study. I will play my friend who has this board on it, since we're both used to it, but I might feel like I had an advantage playing someone unused to the board. Of course, it's not a big deal and you absolutely could use it for a game board if you wanted. I also don't like that when the pieces are around the edge of the board (I usually stick them there when they're captured), the top doesn't sit right (although it closes and stays closed fine, it just sits slightly askance). On my friend's board, some of the white pieces are slightly different colors, as if they came form 2 different batches, although all my pieces match.

Overall, I LOVE this board, would recommend it to ANYONE, and would be personally insulted if you didn't buy one immediately. ;)

Bought this for my kid for Christmas based on all the good reviews. Got to wonder if they got a different version of the game than we did.

Its nice you can close the lid and later resume your game.

What isn't nice is that the paint sticks to the magnets better than to the board surface. The Bishops and pawns are almost identical, and the pieces are ultra cheap (the top edges of the rook break way too easily)

Saw a different set at SupernationalsIV for last week for $3 that has all the features of this set, and NONE of the drawbacks. The $3 set was smaller, fits in a shirt pocket, could be closed and game resumed later etc....

Also, it doesn't label the ranks and files, so recording your game is more difficult.

Not worth the price.

My 7 year old daughter loved these when she got them for Christmas. She spent quite a bit of time over the course of 3-4 days working on them, and then she was finished. It was great while it lasted. There are 4 pictures included and they're a good size. The pictures themselves are on hard sheets of paperboard. The stickers are little colored pieces mounted on a square of foam. The stickers were a little difficult for my daughter to get started, but once I pulled one off for her she didn't have any trouble.

This toy is not suitable for young children, preteens and up would be ideal, though. My 12 year old really liked it. You have to have patience, though, and chip through the rock slowly. This was part of Christmas gifts to my 8yr old niece who is sooo excited about finding that perfect little rock. She pleaded to start right away finding the gems inside. After securing a safe and clean place with a drop cloth, goggles for protection of those young eyes, she began, at first not quite knowing how hard to use the little plastic hammer. After several attempts not much progress, so she used a plastic knife and used a sawing motion had much more success. This kept her busy for at least 4 straight hours, with bursts of laughter when she was able to dig one of the gems at a time, all in all she had a great time and found a total of 10 gems. The box said there should be at least 4, so she was happy to have found more, and now wants more. Birthdays coming and will buy this again.

My 7-year old daughter just loves rocks. If you give her the opportunity, she'll gladly dig through dirt to find rocks of all types. When I stumbled across this kit, I decided it would be perfect -- and I wasn't wrong.

At the center of this kit is a brick-sized plaster block, containing multiple hidden crystals. Using the tools supplied, the goal is to find and free the cystals from the plaster. It's mostly a trial-and-error process. Although it took a while to find the first crystal, my daughter carefully studied it and compared it to the included guide. Although it may be difficult to identify a couple of them, once you free a few of them, you'll be able to use the process of elimination to correctly identify them.

The crystals are raw in nature and therefore quite interesting to examine. The kit includes a speciman card onto which you can attach the crystals (or any other rocks your child might find), and a small bag for storage. The plastic cutting tool will wear quickly, but the plaster isn't hard to cut with other safe tools.

Of course, excavating the crystals can create a mess. Expect to have plaster dust all over your work surface, the floor, your child, and yourself. However, this is a perfect gift for a child who needs something to "keep busy", and is an extremely entertaining way to collect crystals.

They're very lightweight - they might crush if something heavy dropped on them. I taught my son colors by telling him to keep the blue brush with the blue paint, and the red brush with the red paint etc. It keeps your paints from running together and ending up with some sludge like color. They go perfectly with his easel. It also teaches him to be neat. I buy those jumbo Crayola coloring books and instead of just slushing the paint around on a blank sheet of paper with his hands, he tries to paint the coloring sheet. If a little paint gets on his hand he asks it If I could wash it off of his finger. So that he can proceed with his art. If I could recommend only one thing for a toddler parent it would be to introduce your child to painting with these brushes rather than slushing paint around with their hands. I got this Scooter for my 7 year old girl. Not just because all the neighbor girls had a razor, but because I realized it might help with her balance. Wow! did I make the right call on that.

About a year ago I took the training wheels off her bike; needless to say, she wrecked and it was traumatic. Since she has refused to try again. It was my daydream fear of her being one of those adults who can't ride a bike.

The scooter however, has been a huge benefit in developing her balance on two wheels. After about two nights of riding it she is all over the place, with no fear and doing very well. As a father I don't feel like such a failure to teach my kid the art of two wheel balance anymore. Now she is ready to go for the bike again and join the rest of her age group riding around. This scooter is well built, has a much better foot deck than the original models. The large wheels are so much better for handling cracks in the sidewalk and bumps in the street. Very pleased with this purchase!

I bought this model of Razor to keep up with my kids. They have the standard original "A" models, which are low to the ground and relatively light in overall weight. The cruiser is heavier (maybe by @30%) and higher off the ground than the original. The larger wheels give it a somewhat smoother ride (although this could be attributed to it's spanking-new wheels). The deck is covered entirely with an anti-skid layer -- which is nice. Unlike other reviewers, I have no problem with it's "low" handlebars (and I'm 5' 11"). Plus, the deck board is "warped" by design, I assume, so that when you step on it, it flexes to a nearly-flat surface. Otherwise the deck would sag if it started in a perfectly horizontal position. Oh, and my kids can handle this too, even my 48-pound seven year old. The only drawbacks I can see with the wooden deck are the eventual dings and chips along the edge from curbs and such and the possiblility of moisture weakening the plywood over time. Probably need to keep this one out of the rain.

It's a nice scooter; it rides well and is very fast. Not quite a xootr, but great for the price. However, the wheels that come with this thing is already starting to crack and fall apart. The front and back wheel already have big chunks of the wheel that fell off. The wheel makes a funny sound now when I ride. There are other cracks and it looks like other half-inch pieces of polyurethane is about to fall off. If this happens to the wheels in one week, it might be cheaper to just go with the xootr as I will be paying a lot of money to replace the wheel. I am around 150 lbs so am well below the 175 lbs limit on this. Otherwise, it's a good scooter; I just wish they had harder or more durable wheels (I ride in NYC).

It's really cute and entertains her for a long time during "quiet time" while her sister is napping in the afternoon. The cards seem quite durable -- made of heavyweight paper and are linked at the top so they can't get lost. Each bird or sea creature has two cards with nice photographs and probably three or four pieces of information to be gleaned by the child. And there are a ton of interesting ones -- probably 40 animals or so? She has actually taught me a few things that she has learned from these cards! It is simple, and I'm not convinced it has much educational value, as do most of the other Leapster games we have. I recommend you buy the Draw & Write or the Letter Factory. My children fight / "take turns" over those two games and they are educational.

My son received the Leapster system for his 4th birthday as a gift. It comes with this game. While this game isn't the most challenging, my son enjoys it. I am not sure at what level the previous reviewers children are at, but my son doing very well at school. Maybe they are academically beyond him. He knows all of his letters, their sounds, and can read three letter words. He can also write out all of the letters in the alphabet, uppper and lower. So while this game isn't extremely challenging, he still found it fun. I haven't found controlling the letterpillar to be difficult at all, as a previous reviewer said. The arrow buttons on the control respond fine when controlling the letterpillar. I think this game was great as a "free" game with the system, because it allowed him to get used to using the controller. And my son isn't electronically deprived. He uses our personal computer all of the time to play games. He also has a V-Smile with other games. We wanted this as a portable gaming system. Again, it was a good first, free game. I have nothing bad to say about it considering I didn't have to pay for it.

I got one for my 8 year old and my 3 year old and they love them, but I hate the time they need to spend on my computer. They don't play with the Actual stuffed toy itself, but they want to log on and play. That was something they do anyway with some of the kids online games and community. So basicly you pay for a password to enter online and name and create a online pet to care for. Unless I missed something. I allow her to get online once a week and do the Webkinz thing. She enjoys it. I think it helps to teach responsibility. I think the stuffed animals are adorable so that alone makes them worth it. But the kids are not that impressed, not mine anyway. My 3 year old love the Pink Froggy, yet my 8 year old would rather do the internet thing. So U decide. Good luck.

I replaced an 8'x8' area of carpet that I have replaced w/ these tiles. I purchased (3) sets of these & I have (8) squares left + a bunch of borders. This will be the kids play area in the family room. The carpet in this corner of my family room was ruined, & I am still a few years away from adding hardwood floors. I cut out the carpet to the exact size of the tiles & attached it to the floor w/ carpet tape. I was concerned with cold transfer from the concrete floor below, but with the thickness & density of these tiles, I don't think it will be a problem. I used double stick tape on the tiles , but only on the outside row, as the carpet & walls will pretty much hold it in place. The kids (4 1/2 & 3) spent the first three days w/ the new tiles playing "jump to the color", "how many (color) tiles are there?", hopscotch, & generally jumping around & having a good time. I believe that this was the most economical temporary solution to replacing carpet in this corner. I'm Extremely Pleased.

We have been through a lot of different kinds of bubbles in the past year and this is far by the best of them all. These bubbles actually float for a while without popping which is nice since a lot of bubbles will come off the wand and pop 2 seconds later. My two children don't really care about the quality of the product as long as its bubbles. The educational value is good b/c its how we taught our 3 year old with autism to ask for bubbles by sign language so she's learning to ask for everything instead of not knowing how to ask and getting upset. We bought this for Christmas in 07 when my son was 2 1/2. He didn't play with it much, but now at 3 years old, he loves this game. He loves the whole Thomas family and this game is his favorite. The manners they teach are good, and my son likes to play along with the characters is acting out the manners or emotions. As for the durability of the disk, not so good. We are on our second disk now. Even with very little handling by my sons, the disk is scratched just enough to not work for some of the games. It shuts off when trying top play. I wish they could find a way to make them more durable for a product for kids and used by kids. I do put the disk in for him, but occasionally he will get a hold of it and I guess it gets scratched easily.

I got this for my 2 year old son. Most of the activities are to advanced for him including the mouse, which I've pushed into the mouse storage area in the computer. However, he loves the letters part. He can press any letter and it will say the letter, the letter's sound, and something that starts with that letter. He likes repeating the letter and the item that starts with that letter. He will also go hunting for a specific letter when he wants to see something specific. My mom bought this for my son's 3rd birthday today (he will be 3 next week), and he loves it. He can't keep away from it. He keeps opening it, turning on the switch, and punching all the keys, then turning it off and closing it, only to return to it within a few minutes. He just can't get enough. Lots of great features, but my 2 year old (who asked for this toy on a trip to ToysRUs) has a little trouble with the games. She loves the phonics mode and I know will grow into the others. She loves to pretend type, but has a little trouble with the very unresponsive mouse; I even have trouble navigating with it! Definitely wait until your child is bigger if you want them to take full advantage of all the fun features!

I got the older version of this laptop for my son when he was about 9 months, to keep his attention away from my own laptop. It worked, and more than that, by 19 months he was recognizing and saying all the letters. The old one was extremely shock resistant and the handle was a nice feature, however, after spilling water over the keyboard half of the keys stopped working. Therefore I got this newer version that has also the typing feature and I also got one for our friends' son, who enjoys it as well.

One observation though... my son is now 21 months and although this was his favorite toy for almost a year, his interest seems to be decreased lately.. I would probably recommend this for 1-4 years olds.

I like Melissa and Doug products they are made well for the most part and stand up to toddlers rough handling. I am giving only 4 stars for this one because toddlers do put things in their mouths and I found with the Melissa and Doug puzzles, if sucked on enough, the paper on the top with the colors start to peel off. I got this for my 2 year grandson and we work them together, so he never is just alone with the puzzle, still he would put them in his mouth and chew while we were trying to find the right 'spot' for a piece and eventually the picture on top would start to peel off. But the pieces were big and chunk and the puzzle was easy for him to work with. I think this is a very good puzzle for a child over 2 years of age to have.

I bought this for my 3 yr old son. He loves puzzles and dinosaurs. So this was perfect for him. Pieces are thicker than regular puzzles so its pretty durable. Colorful and fun. I'd recommend it if your child likes puzzles, its a good one!

This Baby Einstein toy is perfect fo 6 week olds to 18 month olds and beyond. I can't think of another toy that is quite this versatile! The music is so nice and soft (2 sound settings... the loud isn't even loud!) which is such a nice change from many other loud toys made for children these days. It was simple to put together and very easy to adjust height for each stage (laying, sitting, climbing/walking). I am buying this for all of my friends who have babies going forward!

Took this on an 18 hour drive with a seven year old. It entertained her for a good deal of the trip. When she found all the items she just shook it up and started all over again. When we reached our destination, she and her 12 year old cousin played with it. Her cousin loved it so much I bought one of the others for her for camp. On the trip it was dropped, stepped on, fell off a balcony, and grabbed by a dog and is still in fine shape. I also find it a good stress releaver. My seven year old needed some help with the reading, but hey nothing is perfect.

At 4 and 6, my kids are below the recommended age for this toy. However, they both have a good time shaking and twisting it trying to find all the objects. It's a great item to throw in the car or luggage for a trip since it is self contained.

Like other reviewers, I would rather see a broader variety of objects instead of the 26 letters of the alphabet. Even my 4 y.o. knows his alphabet cold - I'm not sure what educational value the letters would have for kids in the recommended age range of 8 - 13.

I bought this for my youngest granddaughter for Easter and she's already playing with it. Best part is mom is having a fun time with it also. Actually mom was getting a bit flustered as the girls were doing better than she was at finding the items. LOL!

So worth the money, this is a worth while investment for home, school, car,vacations and just about anything else. I have to say that I tried it out before sending it out to my sweetpea and I have fun with it too. It's really durable too so makes it a great choice. At least it gets the kids away from tv and video games. Thumbs up on this one.

My baby absolutely loves this doll. It is probably a favorite toy. The only bad thing about the toy is the cape is attached to the back of the head. My baby ripped the top of the cape from the head and the Count's head busted open as well. I was able to stitch the head back up and the toy is as good as new. Excellent toy if your child enjoys Sesame Street or the Count.

Our 3 yr old son is really good with electronics so we got him the leapster a bit early with this game. He picked up on it so fast and learned quite a bit from "numbers on the run". He is now about to turn 4 and still asks to play it. Some of it is for older kids so he can't do everything but it leaves room for growing and learning. This is a very cute game with "zero" running around catching "quidgets" and solving number problems as he goes. We definitely recommend this game!

I love this art apron my my 6 year-old son! This is one of the few aprons I found that is for his age group/size, is plastic, & is long-sleeved. Since it's long sleeved I don't have to worry about what he's wearing underneath. And he loves the big pockets on the front. It's super easy to clean as well! It's easy enough for him to put on (he does have a little trouble making the velcro at the top behind his neck/shoulder stick properly sometimes) so he can just use it whenever he wants without having to come to me to get him in & out of it. It makes life easier for both if us!
